Rovaniemi: top attractions & road trip guide

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland, sitting almost exactly on the Arctic Circle at the confluence of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers. It is known worldwide as the official hometown of Santa Claus, alongside Arktikum, a striking museum and science center devoted to the Arctic region and its indigenous Sámi culture.
Reaching Rovaniemi from southern Finland is a long drive, often 800 kilometers or more from Helsinki, crossing from the Lakeland into true Lapland wilderness. Roads grow quieter and forests denser the further north you go, with reindeer and elk crossing frequently, and winter driving demands proper studded or winter tyres given snow and ice for much of the year.
