Zaanse Schans: top attractions & road trip guide

Zaanse Schans is an open-air neighborhood on the Zaan river that gathers historic windmills, green wooden houses, and craft workshops relocated from around the Zaan region to recreate the look of an 18th-century Dutch industrial village. It illustrates how windmills once powered sawmills, oil presses, and paint mills for the surrounding area.
The village lies about 30 minutes' drive northwest of Amsterdam, making it a classic day-trip destination by car. Zaanse Schans is itself the attraction, and visitors can tour windmill interiors, watch clog- and cheese-making demonstrations, and stroll the riverside walkway at an easy pace.
