Driving to Aveiro: tolls, fuel & road trip guide
Aveiro is a canal city on Portugal's central coast, about 70 km south of Porto and some 60 km north-west of Coimbra. It sits on the Ria de Aveiro, a lagoon roughly 45 km long that is one of Europe's last largely untouched coastal marshlands and a haven for birds; King José I raised Aveiro to city status in 1759. Painted moliceiro boats glide along the canals of the centre, and the city's signature sweet, ovos moles de Aveiro (egg-yolk cream in a thin wafer shell), carries EU Protected Geographical Indication status.
Aveiro was one of the stops Daytrip's customers added most to their autumn 2026 drives across Europe. By car it is an easy half-day break between Coimbra and Porto on the A1/A25; leave the car near the centre and walk, then drive the 10 km out to the striped beach houses of Costa Nova and the lighthouse at Praia da Barra on the lagoon's sandbar.
Top attractions
Canals and moliceiro boat rides
The long, high-prowed moliceiro boats were built to harvest moliço, lagoon seaweed once used to fertilise local fields; today most carry visitors around the city canals. Each boat bears four painted panels with drawings and often humorous captions. In 2025 UNESCO inscribed the moliceiro's naval carpentry on its list of intangible heritage in need of urgent safeguarding, noting that only five master builders were still working.
Aveiro Museum (Monastery of Jesus)
This Dominican convent housed nuns from 1465 until 1874 and has been a National Monument since 1910. Princess Joana, daughter of King Afonso V, lived here from the 1470s until her death in 1490 and was later beatified as Saint Joana Princesa, the city's patron. Highlights are the gilded-wood church chancel (1725–29), the polychrome marble baroque tomb of the princess by royal architect João Antunes (1699–1711), the cloister and the tiled refectory.
Museu Arte Nova (Casa do Major Pessoa)
Aveiro is known for its Art Nouveau facades, and the Casa do Major Pessoa beside the Jardim do Rossio is the showpiece: a historic townhouse now home to the city's Art Nouveau museum, classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1997. It sits a short walk from the central canal, so it fits easily between a boat ride and lunch.
Aveiro salt pans
Right on the edge of town, the Salinas de Aveiro are a large expanse of traditional salt pans within the Ria de Aveiro. The lagoon is known for gathering flor de sal, a delicate and expensive sea salt skimmed from the surface of the pans, and the flat, watery landscape is good for birdwatching.
Costa Nova's striped palheiros
About 10 km from the centre, in the Ílhavo municipality, Costa Nova do Prado lies on the sandbar between the Atlantic and the lagoon's Mira channel. Its trademark is the palheiros: houses painted with bold vertical or horizontal stripes that began as stores for fishing gear and sardine-salting sheds and are now holiday homes. A cycle path links it with Praia da Barra, and the fish market sells seafood at weekends.
Aveiro Lighthouse at Praia da Barra
Built between 1885 and 1893, the red-and-white striped Farol de Aveiro is Portugal's tallest lighthouse at 62 m and among the tallest masonry lighthouses in the Iberian Peninsula; a spiral of 271 stone steps leads to the top. It stands at Praia da Barra, where the lagoon meets the sea, a few minutes' drive from Costa Nova. The tower opens to visitors only on limited days, so check the schedule before you go.
