Driving to Nazaré: tolls, fuel & road trip guide
Nazaré is a fishing town on Portugal's Silver Coast, built around a wide crescent beach and a clifftop old quarter called Sítio. For centuries it was known for its traditional fishermen and the black-clad widows who sold dried fish along the sand; today it is famous worldwide for the giant waves that break at Praia do Norte, where a deep offshore canyon funnels Atlantic swells into some of the largest surfable waves on Earth.
The town sits about 90 minutes north of Lisbon and slots neatly onto the coastal drive between Óbidos and Coimbra. A short funicular links the seafront to the Sítio headland, where the lighthouse fort doubles as a surf museum and offers a front-row view of the big-wave breaks in winter. Parking is easiest along the upper town and near the funicular's lower station.
