Driving to Bran Castle: tolls, fuel & road trip guide
Bran Castle stands on a rock above the Bran Pass, about 30 kilometers southwest of Brașov, where a medieval road once crossed from Transylvania into Wallachia. Popularly marketed as 'Dracula's Castle', it is one of Romania's most visited monuments and draws extra crowds in October for its annual Halloween event.
Treat it as a side trip from Brașov rather than a stop on the way to Sighișoara: drive out on DN73 via Râșnov, then return through Brașov before heading north. Arrive early on autumn weekends, use the signposted car parks and check opening hours and tickets on the castle's official website.
Top attractions
Bran Castle
Built by the Saxons of Brașov after King Louis I of Hungary granted them the privilege in 1377, the fortress guarded the Bran Pass and later became a residence of Queen Marie of Romania. Its narrow stairways and small rooms fill quickly, so expect queues at busy times.
Halloween 2026: The Legend of Dracul
From 24 October to 1 November 2026 the castle stages its annual Halloween event with themed tours, special effects and actors. Tickets are limited; Halloween night (31 October) is aimed at adults, while 1 November offers a family-friendly tour. Book on the official website.
Râșnov Fortress
About 15 kilometers from Brașov on the DN73 toward Bran, this hilltop refuge fortress dates from the 13th century and sheltered local villagers during raids. Inside are rebuilt houses, a chapel and a deep well; it fell only once, in 1612, when besiegers cut off its water supply.
Zărnești Gorges (Piatra Craiului National Park)
West of Bran, the town of Zărnești is the northern gateway to Piatra Craiului National Park, whose limestone ridge is the longest and highest in Romania. The gorges run for about 3.9 kilometers between vertical limestone walls on a path the park describes as accessible to all visitors.
