Driving to Sinaia: tolls, fuel & road trip guide
Sinaia is a mountain resort in Romania's Prahova Valley, nicknamed the 'Pearl of the Carpathians' and set at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains. The town grew up around a 17th-century monastery and became the summer seat of Romania's royal family after King Carol I chose the valley for his residence, which is why it is home to Peleș Castle, one of the country's most visited historic monuments.
For drivers, Sinaia sits right on the DN1 road between Bucharest and Brașov, making it a natural stop on the way into Transylvania, about two hours from the capital and under an hour from Brașov. The road climbs through forested gorges that turn gold in autumn; arrive early at the castle car parks, which fill quickly on weekends, and book Peleș tickets for a timed slot in advance.

Peleș Castle
The former summer residence of King Carol I, built between 1873 and 1914 in an eclectic Neo-Renaissance style, with lavishly carved wooden interiors, stained glass and large collections of arms and art. Visits run on timed-entry tickets.
Pelișor Castle
A smaller castle on the same royal estate, built for the future King Ferdinand and Queen Marie and known for its Art Nouveau interiors. It is ticketed separately from Peleș and can close for conservation, so check the museum schedule first.
Sinaia Monastery
The Orthodox monastery founded in the late 17th century by the boyar Mihail Cantacuzino after a pilgrimage to Mount Sinai, from which the town takes its name. Its small old church and larger 19th-century church stand in quiet courtyards on the way up to the castles.
Bucegi Mountains cable car
Cable cars and gondolas climb from the town to the Cota 1400 and Cota 2000 areas of the Bucegi range, a ski zone in winter and a base for hiking and wide views over the Prahova Valley in the warmer months, weather permitting.
Sinaia Casino and Dimitrie Ghica Park
The elegant early-20th-century casino building, now used as a conference and events venue, overlooks the landscaped Dimitrie Ghica Park in the town centre, a pleasant stroll between the railway station and the royal estate.
