Bratislava is Slovakia's capital, a compact city on the Danube where a hilltop castle overlooks a well-preserved medieval old town of narrow lanes, baroque palaces, and a Gothic cathedral that once hosted Hungarian coronations. Its location at the meeting point of Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary has shaped a layered history visible in Habsburg-era architecture alongside Soviet-period housing blocks across the river.

Road trippers pass through Bratislava as a natural gateway between Vienna and central Slovakia, with the old town easily explored on foot after parking near the Danube embankment. The city sits at the start of routes heading north into the Small Carpathians wine region or east toward the Tatra mountains, making it a convenient first or last stop on a Slovak itinerary.
