Stops on this route
Bratislava
Bratislava is Slovakia's capital, a compact city on the Danube where a hilltop castle overlooks a well-preserved medieval old town of narrow lanes, baroque palaces, and a Gothic cathedral that once hosted Hungarian coronations. Its location at the meeting point of Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary has shaped a layered history visible in Habsburg-era architecture alongside Soviet-period housing blocks across the river.
Banská Štiavnica
Banská Štiavnica is a former silver and gold mining town tucked into the volcanic hills of central Slovakia, its steep, winding streets lined with Renaissance and baroque burgher houses that reflect centuries of mineral wealth. Once among the largest towns in the Kingdom of Hungary, it pioneered mining education and engineering, earning it UNESCO World Heritage status for its historic town center and surrounding mining landscape.
Poprad
Poprad is a regional city in northern Slovakia that grew from a medieval trading settlement into the main transport and service hub for the High Tatras, the country's highest and most dramatic mountain range. Its historic core, Spišská Sobota, preserves a Gothic church and rows of Renaissance burgher houses that recall its centuries-old role as a market town on trade routes through the Carpathians.
Košice
Košice is Slovakia's second-largest city and the historical capital of the eastern region, built around one of the largest medieval town centers in Europe and anchored by the largest Gothic cathedral in the country. Long a crossroads of trade between Hungary, Poland, and the Balkans, it carries a mixed Hungarian, German, and Slovak heritage visible in its architecture, and it served as European Capital of Culture in 2013.
