Burgos is a historic city in Castile and León best known for its towering Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for its role as the burial place of the medieval knight El Cid. It is a key stop on the Camino Francés, where the route crosses the wide Castilian plateau, and pilgrims traditionally rest here before the long, exposed stretch known as the Meseta.

On a road trip, Burgos sits on the high, open tableland of northern Castile, making it a natural pause between the Basque coast and Madrid or León. The drive in crosses rolling wheat country and limestone ridges, and the compact old town along the Arlanzón River rewards a walking stop before continuing on.
