Dubrovnik is a walled Dalmatian city on the southern Adriatic coast, its limestone streets and baroque buildings enclosed almost entirely by intact medieval fortifications. Long a maritime and trading power in its own right as the Republic of Ragusa, it is now one of Croatia's most visited sites and a filming location widely known from television and film productions.

Dubrovnik marks the southern end of the classic Dalmatian coastal drive from Zadar and Split, reached via one of the most scenic stretches of the Adriatic Highway, which hugs cliffs and bays for much of the way. The old town itself is car-free, with parking located outside the walls and the historic centre explored entirely on foot.
