Fort William: top attractions & road trip guide

Fort William sits on the shore of Loch Linnhe beneath Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, and is widely known as the Outdoor Capital of the UK for its hiking, climbing, and mountain biking. The town grew around a garrison built to control the Highlands and today serves as the main service centre for the western Highlands.
It makes a natural overnight stop on a road trip along the Great Glen, connecting Glencoe to the south with the Isle of Skye to the north via the A82 and A87. The surrounding roads pass lochs and mountains and, on the West Highland Line just outside town, the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct; remember to drive on the left throughout.
