Gothenburg is Sweden's second-largest city, a west-coast port built along canals in the 17th century with strong Dutch influence on its street plan. It has since grown into a hub of shipping, industry, and a distinctive, laid-back food and culture scene.

On a Swedish road trip, Gothenburg sits on the country's west coast, offering a contrast to the Stockholm–Malmö route further east through lake and forest country. Its coastal setting, archipelago views, and proximity to Norway and Denmark make it a natural stop for travelers routing along the Kattegat coast.
