Inverness: top attractions & road trip guide

Inverness is the capital of the Scottish Highlands, a city on the River Ness where it meets the Moray Firth, and has been an important crossroads since medieval times. Its compact centre, anchored by a red sandstone castle, mixes shops and restaurants with riverside walks and views toward the surrounding hills.
The city is the natural gateway to Loch Ness on a Highlands road trip, positioned where the A82, A9, and A96 meet, making it a convenient hub for day trips to the loch, Culloden battlefield, and the Cairngorms. Roads in and around the city are generally well maintained multi-lane routes, though rural stretches narrow further out; drive on the left throughout.
