Driving to Utrecht: tolls, fuel & road trip guide

Utrecht is the fourth-largest city of the Netherlands and capital of the province of the same name. It has been the country's religious centre since the 8th century, received city rights in 1122, and in 1579 gave its name to the Union of Utrecht that laid the foundations of the Dutch Republic. Its medieval centre is defined by the Dom Tower and a canal system with wharves and cellars below street level, and Lonely Planet picked it for its Best in Travel 2026 list.

Sitting in the very middle of the country, Utrecht is roughly an hour's drive from The Hague and Rotterdam, so it slots easily into a Holland loop. De Haar Castle lies on the western edge of the municipality, on the way in from the coast. The compact old centre is best explored on foot or by bike, so drivers usually leave the car at a park-and-ride or a garage on the edge of the centre.

Top attractions

Dom Tower

At 112 metres the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and the symbol of Utrecht, built between 1321 and 1382. It has stood alone since the unfinished nave of St Martin's Cathedral collapsed in 1674, on the spot where the city began almost 2,000 years ago.

Oudegracht

The "old canal" through the centre, partly following the original course of the Rhine. Once the city's locks were finished in 1275 the water level stayed constant, allowing wharves and cellars at water level below the street; many former warehouses there are now restaurants and cafés.

Rietveld Schröder House

Built in 1924 by Gerrit Rietveld for Truus Schröder-Schräder, it is one of the best-known examples of De Stijl architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The restored house is now a museum run by the Centraal Museum.

De Haar Castle

The largest castle in the Netherlands, on the western edge of Utrecht. Architect Pierre Cuypers rebuilt the ruined medieval castle between 1892 and 1912 for Baron Etienne van Zuylen and his wife Hélène de Rothschild, whose family financed the work; it has some 200 rooms, only part of which are open to visitors.

Museum Speelklok

A museum of self-playing musical instruments housed since 1984 in the former Buurkerk church. Music boxes, musical clocks, pianolas and the typically Dutch large street organs are on show, most of them still able to play for visitors.

Centraal Museum

Utrecht's main museum, founded in 1838, with a collection centred on local art. It holds by far the world's largest collection of paintings by Joachim Wtewael and major works by the Utrecht Caravaggisti such as Gerard van Honthorst and Hendrick ter Brugghen.
