Gijón is a port city on the Bay of Biscay in Asturias, the region's largest population center and a stop on the Camino del Norte pilgrimage route along Spain's northern coast. It combines a working fishing harbor and old quarter, Cimadevilla, with a long urban beach, Roman-era baths, and a strong local cider culture centered on sidrerías.

On a road trip along Asturias's coastline, Gijón works well as an overnight stop between the Basque coast and the Picos de Europa, with the N-632 and A-8 running along dramatic cliffs and green hillsides. The city's promenade and headland park make it an easy place to stretch legs before continuing west toward Avilés and Oviedo.
