Piran: top attractions & road trip guide

Piran is a small medieval town on Slovenia's short Adriatic coastline, built on a narrow peninsula and dense with Venetian Gothic architecture from the centuries it spent under Venetian rule. Its central square, harbor, and warren of narrow stone streets rising toward a hilltop church have changed little in outline for hundreds of years.

On the coastal stretch of a Slovenian road trip, Piran sits at the country's southwestern tip, close to both the Italian and Croatian (Istrian) borders, with the towns of Koper and Izola along the same short coast road. The old town is closed to most traffic, so cars are left at its edge and the center explored on foot.
