Postojna: top attractions & road trip guide

Postojna is a small town in southwestern Slovenia known almost entirely for the vast karst cave system beneath it, one of the largest and most visited show caves in Europe. Millions of years of water erosion carved its chambers, corridors, and formations through the surrounding limestone plateau.
For road trippers, Postojna lies roughly midway between Ljubljana and the Slovenian coast, making it a natural stop on the drive toward Piran or the Italian border. The cave itself is toured partly by underground train and partly on foot, while the town above is small and centered on the park at the cave's entrance.
