Driving to Saint-Malo: tolls, fuel & road trip guide

Saint-Malo is a walled port on Brittany's Emerald Coast, built on a granite island once linked to the mainland only by a sand spit. Home of the corsairs and the port from which Jacques Cartier sailed to the Saint Lawrence, it was heavily bombed in 1944 and rebuilt behind its ramparts.

In autumn 2026 the town hosts the start of the Route du Rhum: the race village opens on 20 October and the solo transatlantic fleet leaves for Guadeloupe on 1 November, so expect busy roads and hotels. Park outside the old town, check the tide tables before walking out to the islands, and continue east along the bay to Mont-Saint-Michel, about an hour's drive.

Top attractions

Intra-Muros and the ramparts

The old town inside the walls is the heart of Saint-Malo. Walk the free rampart path for views over the beaches, the Rance estuary and the forts offshore, then wander the granite streets rebuilt after the destruction of 1944.

Grand Bé

A tidal island a few hundred meters from the walls at the mouth of the Rance, reachable on foot from Bon-Secours beach at low tide. It holds the remains of an old fort and the sea-facing grave of the writer Chateaubriand, a native of Saint-Malo. Watch the tide so you are not cut off.

Fort National

Built from 1689 to plans by Vauban to protect the port, this granite fort stands on a tidal rock just off the walled city. In August 1944 German forces held Saint-Malo hostages here. It can be reached on foot at low tide and is open to visitors when the French flag is flying.

Route du Rhum 2026 race village

The single-handed transatlantic race from Saint-Malo to Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe is held every four years. For its 13th edition the race village opens on 20 October 2026 and closes on start day, 1 November, with the boats moored in the port before they leave. Check the official site for opening hours and traffic plans.

Cancale and Pointe du Grouin

About 15 kilometers east of Saint-Malo on the way to Mont-Saint-Michel, the fishing port of Cancale is known as Brittany's oyster capital, with a harbor oyster market and beds visible from the pier at low tide. A coastal path leads to the Pointe du Grouin headland, with views across the bay toward Mont-Saint-Michel.
