Assisi is a rose-stone hill town in the heart of Umbria, the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare and one of Italy's great pilgrimage centres. Rising on the slopes of Monte Subasio above the Spoleto valley, its medieval lanes, Roman remains and Franciscan basilicas earned the whole town UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000, and it remains one of central Italy's most-visited hill towns as travellers increasingly favour Umbria over crowded Tuscany.
For a road trip Assisi sits easily between Rome and Tuscany, well placed as an Umbrian stop on a classic Italy route. Cars are kept out of the historic core, so use the signed car parks and lifts or escalators below the walls (Parcheggio Giovanni Paolo II and Porta Nuova are the handiest) and explore on foot. Allow the best part of a day for the two great basilicas, the main square and the hilltop fortress, and consider the wider Umbrian countryside of Perugia, Spello and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli on the plain below.
