Bergen: top attractions & road trip guide

Bergen is Norway's gateway to the western fjords, built around a harbor ringed by seven mountains. Its Bryggen wharf, with rows of colorful wooden Hanseatic merchant buildings, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the compact center mixes fish markets, narrow lanes, and funicular rides up to viewpoints.
On a road trip, Bergen sits at the head of a dense network of fjord roads, ferries, and tunnels leading south and north along the coast. Expect frequent rain, steep switchbacks climbing out of the city, and short ferry hops that are a normal part of getting between fjord arms.
