Helsingør (Elsinore) is a harbor town at the northeastern tip of Zealand, facing Sweden across the narrowest point of the Øresund strait. For centuries the Danish crown collected the Sound Dues here from every ship passing between the North Sea and the Baltic, and the wealth built Kronborg Castle, the UNESCO-listed Renaissance fortress that Shakespeare chose as the setting of Hamlet.
The town lies about 45 kilometers north of Copenhagen, reached quickly on the E47 motorway or more slowly along the coastal Strandvejen road past fishing villages and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art at Humlebæk. Autumn, when the North Zealand forests turn golden and the summer crowds thin out, is a good season to combine the castle, the maritime museum and the medieval streets before continuing west towards Roskilde.
